Accountant CV for Uganda: format, qualifications and keywords

For accountants and finance officers in Uganda: show your professional qualification status, the tax and reporting work you own, and results in UGX.

By the cvmakerr team2 min read

Accounting and finance jobs in Uganda range from accounts assistant in an SME to finance manager in an NGO, a bank or government. Panels usually check three things first: your qualifications (a degree, and progress towards or completion of a professional qualification such as CPA or ACCA), the type of work you have owned, and whether you can be trusted with money. Your CV should answer all three in the first half page.

The structure that works

  1. 1Name and contact details.
  2. 2Profile: your level, years of experience, sector and the systems you use.
  3. 3Qualifications: degree, then professional qualification and its exact status, for example “CPA (U), completed” or “ACCA, 9 of 13 papers passed”. Add ICPAU membership if you have it.
  4. 4Experience: newest first, with what you owned (payroll, tax, reporting, audits) and the size of the organisation or budget.
  5. 5Software and systems.
  6. 6Referees: a finance manager, auditor or director you reported to.

Show the work you owned, with numbers

Every accountant “prepares reports”. What sets you apart is the scale, the deadline and the outcome: how many staff on the payroll, what budget, which returns you filed and whether they were on time, what audit findings you cleared.

Before

Prepared financial reports and handled taxes.

After

Prepared monthly management accounts for a UGX 4.2bn-turnover distributor and filed VAT, PAYE and withholding tax returns on time for 24 months running; cleared 7 of 9 prior-year audit findings.

Your own numbers will be different. Round sensibly and use figures you can explain.

Keywords finance adverts often use

  • Financial reporting, management accounts, IFRS
  • Bank reconciliations, general ledger, month-end close
  • Budgeting, budget monitoring, variance analysis
  • Tax compliance: VAT, PAYE, withholding tax, URA returns, EFRIS
  • Payroll, NSSF remittances
  • Internal controls, external audit, audit findings
  • Accounts payable and receivable, cash flow management
  • Donor reporting and grant management (NGO roles)

Software and systems

Name the systems you have actually used, for example QuickBooks, Sage, Tally, an ERP such as SAP or Dynamics, or Excel with the functions you rely on. If you have used the government IFMS or a donor reporting system, say so; some adverts ask for it specifically.

Common mistakes

  • Vague or inflated professional qualification status.
  • No figures anywhere on an accountant’s CV.
  • Listing every task under every job instead of the ones you owned.
  • Typos in numbers or dates. In finance, panels notice.
