Using ChatGPT or AI for your CV in Uganda: what works

AI can help you tidy wording and spot gaps, but a CV that sounds like everyone else’s will not get you shortlisted. How to use it without losing your own story.

Yes, you can use ChatGPT or another AI tool to help with your CV, but do not let it write the whole thing. Use it to tidy sentences and check spelling, then put back the real details only you know: your school or workplace, your exact duties and your results. A CV full of smooth, general phrases looks the same as hundreds of others and tells the reader nothing about you.

Why generic AI CVs fall flat

An AI tool does not know your life. If you ask it for "a CV for an accountant in Kampala", it fills the gaps with sentences that sound good but could belong to anyone. Recruiters read many CVs for one post, and they quickly notice lines like "results-driven professional with a passion for excellence".

  • It repeats the same buzzwords: dynamic, motivated, proven track record.
  • It can invent duties, skills or results you never had. If you sign a CV with a false claim, you may be asked about it at the interview.
  • It does not know Ugandan details such as your UNEB results, professional body registration or the usual order of a Ugandan CV.
  • It often adds a long personal statement and skips the facts a reader wants first.

What AI is actually good for

  • Fixing spelling, grammar and punctuation in text you wrote yourself.
  • Turning a long paragraph into short bullet points.
  • Suggesting a stronger verb, such as "led" instead of "was responsible for".
  • Asking you questions about your work so you remember results you forgot to list.
  • Checking that your wording matches the advert, when you paste both in.

A safe way to use it, step by step

  1. 1Write your own first draft in plain words, even if it is messy. List each job, what you did and anything you can count.
  2. 2Paste one section at a time and ask the tool to correct grammar and shorten it, without adding new facts.
  3. 3Read every line against the truth. Delete anything you did not do or cannot explain.
  4. 4Put back your real names, places, subjects, numbers and results.
  5. 5Compare with the advert and use its words only where they describe your real work.
  6. 6Save as a PDF and read it once on your phone, since many employers will open it there.

Example: from generic to yours

Before

Dynamic and results-driven sales professional with a proven track record of driving growth and exceeding targets in a fast-paced environment.

After

Sales officer at an agro-input shop in Masaka (2021–present). Visit farmers and trading centres weekly, keep customer records and follow up unpaid orders. Grew my monthly customer list by signing up new farmer groups.

Use your own real place, duties and numbers. The second version is plainer, but a reader can picture the work.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Pasting in a full CV with your phone number, ID or home address. Keep private details out of public tools where you can.
  • Sending the output without reading it.
  • Copying a sample CV from the internet or from a friend. Employers do notice repeated wording.
  • Using the same AI-written CV for every job.
  • Letting the tool pick a design with columns, icons or graphics that are hard to read on a phone.

FAQ

Will employers know I used AI?

They may not know, but they can tell when a CV is vague and full of buzzwords. If your CV has specific places, duties and results, it will read as yours.

Is it cheating to use ChatGPT for my CV?

Getting help with wording is no different from asking a friend to proofread. What matters is that every fact is true and you can speak about it at the interview.

Can AI write my application letter too?

It can help with grammar, but the letter should say why you want this particular job. Write the reason yourself, then let the tool polish it.
