Best CV maker in Uganda: how to choose the right one
Typing shop, Word template, Canva, ChatGPT or an online CV builder? An honest look at each way to make a CV in Uganda, and the five checks that matter most.
By the cvmakerr team6 min read
The best CV maker in Uganda is the one that gives you a clean, one-column CV in your own words, written the Ugandan way, that you can send as a PDF from your phone. Plenty of tools can make a CV look nice. Far fewer make one that a shortlisting panel and an online application system can both read easily. This guide compares the main options honestly, so you can pick the one that fits you.
What a good CV maker should do for a Ugandan job seeker
Before comparing tools, agree on what “best” means. A CV is not a poster. Its only job is to get you shortlisted, so judge every option against these five checks.
- 1A single column of real, selectable text. Two columns, tables, text boxes, icons and skill bars often come out scrambled when an application system reads them.
- 2Written for Uganda: “CV” not “resume”, dates written day first, referees with phone numbers, and the section order that local panels expect.
- 3Your own words. A panel can spot a CV copied from the internet, and an interview quickly shows if the CV says more than you can explain.
- 4Works on a phone. Most people in Uganda apply from a phone, so you should be able to write, fix and download your CV without a laptop.
- 5A PDF you can send anywhere. Email, online portals and WhatsApp all accept a PDF, and it looks the same on every screen.
The options, compared
Typing and printing shops
Many people still have their CV typed at a stationery or printing shop near campus or in town. It is quick and you get help with the computer. The downside is that you depend on someone else for every change, the same layout is reused for many customers, and the file often stays on the shop’s computer instead of your phone. If you go this way, ask for both the Word file and a PDF, and check every phone number and date before you leave. Our guide CV typing services in Uganda: café or do it yourself? covers what to ask for and how to protect your files.
Microsoft Word or Google Docs templates
A plain Word or Google Docs file is a solid choice if you are comfortable with a computer. You control every word and can save as PDF. Be careful with the built-in templates: many of them use tables, text boxes or headers to create columns, and contact details placed inside a page header are sometimes skipped by application systems. Pick the plainest layout, or start from a blank page.
Design apps such as Canva
Design apps make very attractive CVs, and that is the problem. Most of their CV designs rely on two columns, icons, photos, shapes and coloured blocks. They look great printed, but the text inside can come out in the wrong order when software reads it, and some exports turn text into images. Use them for a portfolio, not for the CV you send to a job portal.
AI chatbots such as ChatGPT
An AI chatbot can help you find words and tidy your grammar. Used carelessly, it produces CVs that sound the same as everyone else’s, full of words like “dynamic” and “results-driven”, and sometimes it invents achievements you never had. Panels are starting to recognise that style. If you use one, give it your real duties and numbers, ask it to shorten rather than decorate, and check every line is true. The full steps are in Using ChatGPT or AI for your CV in Uganda: what works.

International CV and resume websites
Many popular online builders are made for the United States or Europe. Watch for “resume” wording, US date formats, US-style sections, and sites that let you build a CV for free but ask you to pay or subscribe before you can download it. Read the download terms before you spend an hour typing.
CV builders made for Uganda
A builder made for the Ugandan market should already know the formats local employers expect: a standard CV for private companies, a graduate CV for first jobs, the government layout used for Public Service Commission and district jobs, and an NGO layout that leads with results. cvmakerr is one of these. You can build a CV on your phone, see a score out of 100 with the top fixes, and download a single-column PDF without creating an account.
Which one should you use?
- No CV yet and only a phone: use a phone-friendly CV builder made for Uganda, then download the PDF.
- You already have a CV: don’t start again. Check it first, fix the biggest problems, then reformat it if needed.
- You are good with Word or Google Docs: use a plain one-column layout, keep contact details in the body, and save as PDF.
- You want a creative design: make it for your portfolio or LinkedIn, and send a plain version to job portals.
- You are applying to government or an NGO: follow the format those adverts expect, with referees and full dates.
Whatever you choose, read the advert first. If it asks for a particular format, file type, length or number of referees, that instruction wins over any template.
Five mistakes to avoid, whichever tool you use
- Sending the same CV to every advert instead of matching your profile and skills to each job.
- A photo, date of birth, religion or tribe that the advert never asked for.
- An unprofessional email address, or a phone number you no longer use.
- Duty lists that start with “Responsible for” and never say what you achieved.
- Naming the file “CV final final (2).pdf”. Use your name, for example “Sarah-Nakato-CV.pdf”.

Questions people ask
Is there a free CV maker in Uganda?
Yes. Word and Google Docs cost nothing if you already have them, and some online builders, including cvmakerr, let you make and download a CV without paying. Always check whether a site charges at the download step before you start.
Can I make a CV on my phone in Uganda?
Yes. A phone-friendly builder walks you through one section at a time and gives you a PDF at the end. Google Docs also works on a phone, though formatting is harder on a small screen.
Should my CV be in PDF or Word?
Send a PDF unless the advert asks for Word. A PDF keeps your layout the same on every device. Make sure it is a real text PDF, not a photo or scan of a printed page.
Does the CV maker matter more than what I write?
No. The tool only decides whether your CV is easy to read. What gets you shortlisted is the content: clear experience, results with numbers, and skills that match the advert.
