To get an NGO job in Kampala, search the sites where NGOs and UN agencies post vacancies, read the advert and terms of reference carefully, and tailor your CV so that it proves each requirement with a real result from your own work. Many applicants send the same CV to everything. Tailoring is how you stand out.
Where NGO jobs are advertised
Most NGO and UN vacancies are posted on the organisation’s own careers page and on a few job sites. Start with these:
ReliefWeb JobsHumanitarian and development roles
- UN CareersUN Secretariat roles
BrighterMonday UgandaAll sectors · entry to senior
LinkedIn JobsProfessional and international roles
Many NGOs also list vacancies on their own websites and sometimes in newspapers. If you know the kind of organisation you want, for example health, education or agriculture, visit its careers page directly and check it often. Some adverts close quickly, so check the closing date the moment you open one.
Treat a vacancy on WhatsApp or Facebook as a lead only. Find the same advert on the organisation’s official site before you send any documents. Read "Fake jobs in Uganda" for the warning signs.
Read the advert and terms of reference
NGO adverts often come with a job description or terms of reference. This is the document the panel will use to compare candidates, so treat it as your checklist.
- 1Job title and level: does it match your experience, or is it a more senior post?
- 2Minimum qualification: the exact degree or diploma and the field it should be in.
- 3Experience: the type of work, for example donor-funded projects, and how long.
- 4Skills and languages: for field roles, the local languages often matter.
- 5Location and travel: Kampala office, field visits or both.
- 6How to apply and the closing date: follow it exactly.
If you miss a clear minimum requirement, the application is unlikely to go far. Spend your time on posts where you meet the essentials.
Tailor your CV to each NGO job
Use the words in the advert where they truthfully describe what you have done. If the advert asks for monitoring and evaluation, and you have collected data, built reports or trained staff, say so with the project name and your role. Put the most relevant experience at the top of each job.
Before
Worked on community projects and helped with reports.
After
Programme Assistant, health project in a district near Kampala. Collected and entered monthly activity data, prepared the quarterly report for the donor and trained community volunteers on the reporting form.
Keep the layout simple: one column, plain headings and a PDF unless the advert asks for something else. For the full structure, read "CV format for NGOs in Uganda".
Make your application easy to approve
- Send one PDF with your name in the file name, unless the advert asks for separate files.
- Write a short cover letter that names the post and gives two reasons you fit. See "Application letter in Uganda".
- List referees who know your work and have agreed to be contacted. Check that their phone numbers and emails work.
- Keep certificates and recommendation letters scanned and ready.
- Use a professional email address, and check it and your phone often after applying.
If you are a fresh graduate
Without paid NGO experience, show what you do have: volunteering, internships, research projects, community work and relevant short courses. Many organisations take interns or volunteers first. Read "Internships in Uganda" and "Fresh graduate CV in Uganda" for how to present this.
FAQ
Do I have to pay to apply for an NGO job?
Genuine employers do not ask applicants to pay to be shortlisted or hired. If an advert or a message asks you to pay money, verify it on the organisation’s official site and treat it as a scam until it is confirmed.
Do I need experience in an NGO to be hired?
It depends on the post. Check the advert for the experience it asks for. Related experience, such as volunteering or project work, can count if you describe it clearly.
Should I apply for several NGO jobs at once?
Yes, if you meet the requirements of each. Tailor the CV and letter to each advert instead of sending the same copy to every organisation.
